The most dangerous thing to say in a company is “We’ve always done it that way.” So WTF is the effect of that when a whole field says that
Last week I was at the Open Data Science Conference (ODSC) in Boston. There’s a couple of more blogs to come out of that, but this one is special. After the reception on Thursday night where my new “I can’t get drunk at sea level” superpower showed up. I got on twitter and had a bit of a rant. This blog entry are those tweets, unedited. I left out replies I made, and re-tweets of other things during this rant. I’m also adding a graphic that I didn’t have ready at the time, but thats part of another blog post. Also, I drop F bombs like a B-17 over Dresden, so PEGI-18.
And AWWWAAAAAY WE GO

Open source DS conference “We’re going to drive SAS into the fucking ground”
FOSS4G We’re looking to have a hybrid solution.

For whatever reason the spatial community coddles those who “just wanna make maps”
Level up your shit or go brew beer
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
But they don’t NEED to know Spatial Statistics
They fucking should. Math isn’t hard, this community is just full of lazy non curious types
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
OHH, but they don’t need to understand (programming, databases, anything remotely hard) Then I guess they’ll be replaced by a model
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
We coddle, we protect because why? We stick with outdated data formats because that fuck you email with can’t comprehend a fucking database
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
I dunno why we protect them, it holds most of us back, and makes the whole spatial community a joke
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
But then again, you get a free vacation every year so there is that.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
we coddle, we don’t challenge, we allow those who refuse to change hold the rest of us back. But they did upgrade to brand X X.2
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
you have the potential to break free of this but you just want to click and join and click and join can click and join and click and join
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
until brand X realizes what it can do with the tech that’s mainstream now, and people start losing jobs
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
The most dangerous thing to say in a company is “We’ve always done it that way.” So WTF is the effect of that when a whole field says that
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Software are just fucking tools, its the concepts we don’t press…and thats why we’re being eaten by a bunch of stats nerds
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
“No we’re not, our culture is special” The fuck it is…
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
The only thing that would make our culture special is if we all leveled the fuck up and learned the processes & concepts we all should know
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
But we aren’t going to do that, because you’ve all bought into there is only one way to do this, and you don’t change until they change
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Do you realize that GIS jobs have stagnated for the past 5 years So you’re going to compete with your teacher for that City Analyst gig
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
I don’t say this to be mean, to be contrarian, or to just be a dick. I say this shit because I want you to succeed….
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
I’ve never met a stupid person at a GIS conference. I’ve met lazy, comfortable, and people who don’t like to rock the boat…
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
So if I get blackballed or mocked for believing in the baseline intelligence of spatial professionals so be it….
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — -
I’m not here to make a profit off you or your agency, I’m here to help and show you things you might not want to see or can’t see
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
What it all comes down too is I hate seeing wasted potential. So go to SD, enjoy your bubble, but think about 2020, when that’s going to pop.
